Introduction to the frozen autumn
The Frozen Autumn is one of my favorite bands of all time and certainly my favorite goth band. I’ve seen them described as darkwave, gothic wave, and coldwave, but the duo describes their unique sound as frozen wave, which is how I will continue to refer to their style going forward. The Frozen Autumn came to be in 1993 and is still active as of writing in 2026, having produced eight studio albums, with seven under the Frozen Autumn name.
My experience
I legitimately found this band through Wikipedia while trying to learn more about goth music, sometime post-2020. I was intrigued by their band name, simple as. I didn’t give their music a particularly dedicated listen and I added one song, Dusk is like a Dagger, to my library before forgetting about it. A few years later in 2023, when I gained a deeper appreciation for gothic sounds, I rediscovered Dusk is like a Dagger, immediately fell in love with the song, the album it came from, and all of TFA's other albums. Their music helped me feel in touch with my soul and has inspired much of my personal expression in the years since I discovered them. In 2023 alone, I racked up 40,303 minutes listening to their music, according to Apple (and somehow wasn’t in the top percentage of their listener base... don't know if I believe that).
The Frozen Autumn’s music is ethereal, beautiful, and sometimes haunting, like wandering a wintry dreamscape and not minding being lost. Lyrics often relate to feelings, memories, the subconscious, and feel just as ethereal and dreamlike as the music; The duo has mentioned in at least one interview that their typical process sees the development of music before lyrics, so I wonder if writing lyrics within pre-conceived musical constraints contributes to this lyrical style. Whatever the process, the end result is an artistic use of language, interesting and effective, making for beautiful and compelling lyricism. Vocals, too, often sound hauntingly beautiful, almost ghostly. Synths, layered, icy and shimmering, are evidently the duo’s passion, and all together these aspects of their music create a soundscape very aptly described by their band name.
Whenever I don’t feel like myself, I can listen to The Frozen Autumn and feel a sort of peace again. This shrine is dedicated to my interest in the band and my love of their music, music that creates an experience like no other.
